Clocks
Imagine modern civilization without a sense of time. Depending on your point of view, this could be wonderful or horrible. Humans have used devices to measure time for thousands of years. The current system of time measurement, based on 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, was created by the Sumerians around 2000 BC. This system was chosen because 60 is a number that is easy to divide into parts and was very useful for early math and astronomy.
The earliest timekeepers used the movement of the sun (sundials) or water (water clocks). The oldest sundials were used in ancient Egypt around 1500 BC. Water clocks worked by letting water flow slowly from one container to another. People could tell the time by measuring the water level. Other early clocks included the candle clock, which burned slowly, the time stick, and the hourglass, which measures time with sand.
The first known mechanical clocks were water-powered and appeared in Greece around the 3rd century BC. In the 10th century AD, Chinese engineers invented clocks that used mercury to move the mechanism. Arabic engineers in the 11th century created water clocks with gears and weights, making them more reliable.
In Europe, the first mechanical clocks with gears and a part called a verge escapement appeared at the start of the 14th century. These clocks were used in churches and monasteries to ring bells at set times. Pendulum clocks, invented in 1656 by Christiaan Huygens, were more accurate than earlier mechanical clocks. They became the standard timekeepers until the 1930s.
Quartz clocks, which use a crystal to keep time, were invented in the 1930s. They made measuring time even more accurate. After World War II, atomic clocks were developed. These are the most accurate clocks today and help keep international time standards.
Thanks to these inventions, we can now measure time very precisely, helping us organize daily life and scientific work.
