A. In 1986, some construction workers made a discovery at a site in Sanxingdui, China. They were digging trenches for a new sewage system when they saw some unusual stone fragments. It turned out that the workers had uncovered a huge pit filled with ancient artefacts. Among all artefacts were stones, bronze masks, jewellery, gold and jade objects, animal bones, and elephant tusks. One bronze statue, featuring a figure with a slender waist, elegant clothing, and giant hands, was 2.6 m high in total. Analysis showed that the artefacts were about 3,000 years old.
B. The discovery met archaeological curiosity for several reasons. First, some of the artefacts showed metalworking techniques that were unusually advanced for the time in which they were created. Second, many of the statues and bronze masks were unique, unlike other objects found in ancient Chinese art or anywhere else. The artefacts belonged to an unknown, wealthy and powerful civilization with its own artistic style. They expressed a specific view of the world that developed in and around Sanxingdui, a remote region surrounded by high mountains.
C. Many of the objects were strangely damaged. It seemed that somebody had broken or burned the artefacts before they were thrown into the pit. This led researchers to the idea that the pit was part of a mysterious ritual or ceremonial practice. The way the objects were broken proved it was done on purpose, not by accident. Some experts believe the objects were destroyed as offerings to gods or ancestors. Some think this was part of ending a special event or ceremony. Yet, the purpose behind these actions remains unclear, adding mystery to the Sanxingdui civilisation.
D. Perhaps the most challenging question was connected with the people who had left the artefacts behind. Further excavations uncovered more artefacts, including the remains of an ancient city wall. The civilisation at ancient Sanxingdui apparently flourished for hundreds of years and disappeared around 1100 BC. There were no signs of human bodies at the site, so many researchers believe the people left the place and moved somewhere else, possibly to the ancient city of Jinsha. But why would an apparently wealthy and powerful civilisation suddenly move away?
E. The question interested Professor Fan from Sichuan University. He looked at the area around Sanxingdui and noticed a narrow river near the excavation site, which ran through a wide dried-up river bed. This suggested that the river had been much wider in the past. Professor Fan thinks that 3,000 years ago, an earthquake changed the river’s flow. This reduced the amount of water in the ancient city, so the residents had to move to where the river flowed more heavily. His theory was supported by ancient records of a large earthquake and sudden floods around that time.
F. Yet, many questions remain unanswered. Researchers are still trying to understand daily life in the city, as well as what became of the city’s inhabitants once they left. It seems that the people of Sanxingdui merged with nearby cultures, leaving little trace behind. No written records have been found at the site, so it is difficult to put together the civilisation’s full story. Despite this, excavations continue to uncover new artefacts that offer more and more clues about their society. Each discovery serves as a key to solving the secrets of this long-lost and mysterious culture.
G. Fortunately, questions are not the only things that remain in Sanxingdui. In 1997, a museum opened near the site where the discovery had been made. Visitors from around the world can admire the beautiful statues and bronze work, and immerse themselves in the facts and mysteries surrounding this culture. The collection includes thousands of exhibits, and interactive displays and multimedia presentations help bring the story of Sanxingdui to life for visitors of all ages. It has become a major cultural destination, attracting scientists, tourists and locals alike.
